Summer at Hockaday Teacher

Position Description (What you will do): 

Summer at Hockaday is seeing enthusiastic, responsible, and engaging instructors to lead high-quaity summer camps and classes for students ages 4 through 8th grade. Summer teachers create safe, joyful, and enriching learning experiences wile modeling professionalism, creativity, and care for each camper. This role is ideal for educators, content specialists, and experienced youth instructors who enjoy hands-on teaching in a dynamic summer environment. Summer positions typically run between June and July with weekly or multi-week commitments. Daily schedules vary by camp, and instructors must be available for required training prior to the start of camp.

  • Plan and lead age-appropriate, engaging lessons and activities aligned with the camp’s theme or subject area
  • Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment that supports curiosity, confidence, and collaboration
  • Adapt instruction to meet the needs and interests of diverse learners
  • Maintain appropriate structure, routines, and transitions throughout the day
  • Supervise campers at all times, ensuring safety and well-being
  • Build positive relationships with campers and foster a sense of belonging
  • Support social-emotional development through encouragement, guidance, and clear expectations
  • Arrive on time and prepared each day
  • Communicate effectively with Summer at Hockaday leadership and support staff
  • Follow all program policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Maintain professionalism in interactions with campers, families, and colleagues
  • Work collaboratively with co-teachers, counselors, and program staff
  • Participate in required training, orientation, and meetings
  • Assist with setup, cleaup, and organization of materials and classroom spaces
  • Assist with arrival and dismissal of campers each day
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Strong communication, organization, and classroom-management skills
  • Enthusiasm for teaching, mentoring, and engaging students
  • Ability to manage groups of students in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Reliable, responsible, and adaptable in a fast-paced environment
  • Content-area expertise relevant to the camp (e.g., STEM, arts, humanities, enrichment, athletics)
  • Previous summer camp or classroom teaching experience
  • Must have the ability to work in a school environment through satisfactory completion of all legally required and School-required background and screening checks and verifications, including criminal and sex offender background checks.

In this role, you will.... 

  • Participate in all requisite trainings prior to the start of the summer program, and throughout the summer program.
  • Attend required staff development and training sessions
  • Attend periodic summer staff meetings
  • Acknowledge receipt of the current Employee Handbook and are responsible for reviewing the contents and abiding by rules, policies and procedures stated in the Handbook or otherwise by the School
  • Abide by Hockaday’s Code of Ethics and Conduct
  • Commit to the ideals expressed in Hockaday’s Tenets of Faculty Excellence


Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Ability to actively participate in camp activities indoors and outdoors
  • Ability to stand, walk, and engage with campers for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds (supplies, equipment, etc.)
  • Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with students, fellow staff and community members
