The Hockaday School seeks skilled, flexible, and dedicated professionals to join our team as substitute teachers. In this role, you will play a key part in maintaining the high standard of learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher, ensuring that instruction continues seamlessly and students remain engaged in a supportive and enriching environment. Essential Functions:

• Implement lesson plans and materials provided by the regular teacher, divisional office or department head.
• Maintain a positive, safe, and respectful classroom environment that promotes learning and engagement.
• Adjust and personalize lessons based on student needs and classroom dynamics, while adhering to the school’s curriculum standards.
• Document a summary of the day, including progress on assignments and notable student behavior, both positive and negative.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with students, colleagues, and parents (if needed) to support effective learning.
• Adhere to school policies and procedures, such as taking attendance and managing classroom protocols.
• Work collaboratively with colleagues, support staff, and division heads to ensure seamless educational continuity.
• Supervise students throughout the school day, including during recess, lunch, and transitions between activities.
• Demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, and enthusiasm while teaching across different subjects and grade levels.
• Lead by example in classroom management, teaching techniques, and adherence to school policies.
• Maintain a flexible, positive outlook, strong work ethic, and sense of humor in diverse teaching situations.

Qualifications/Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree, with a preference for candidates holding a degree in Education or a related field.
• Prior teaching or substitute teaching experience is preferred.
• Proven ability to manage classrooms effectively and engage students in meaningful learning.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on teamwork and collaboration.
• Experience in leveraging technology for both instructional innovation and administrative tasks.

Position Description (What you will do):

The Hockaday School is seeking a passionate and skilled Piano Instructor to join our Private Music Lessons Program. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in piano instruction, with expertise in various styles and genres. The Piano Instructor will be responsible for guiding students in developing their piano technique, musicality, and performance skills.

The Hockaday School seeks an enthusiastic and mission driven Director of Summer at Hockaday to provide visionary leadership, strategic planning, and day-to-day management of Hockaday’s comprehensive summer programs. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a dynamic portfolio of academic, enrichment, athletic, and specialty camps that align with Hockaday’s mission and uphold its standards of excellence. The Director ensures a safe, inclusive, and engaging experience for all participants while driving innovation, operational efficiency, and financial sustainability. Reporting to the Director of Auxiliary Programs, this position is a 12-month position with part-time work September through May and full-time work June through August.

• Evaluate program effectiveness through data analysis, surveys, and feedback to guide continuous growth and improvement
• Oversee daily operations of the summer programs, including scheduling, facilities usage, and logistics
• Manage registration, billing, and communication processes in coordination with the Director of Auxiliary Programs
• Coordinate with various departments, such as Security, Facilities, and Dining to ensure seamless program delivery
• Recruit, hire, train, and supervise summer staff, including teachers, camp counselors, and support personnel
• Foster a positive and collaborative team culture that reflects Hockaday’s values
• Participate in professional development opportunities for auxiliary and summer programs personnel
• Manage the summer program budget to achieve established revenue and enrollment goals
• Monitor financial performance, control expenses, and pursue new revenue-generating opportunities
• Collaborate with the Director of Auxiliary Programs on pricing structures and financial reporting
• Design and execute marketing strategies that promote Summer at Hockaday
• Develop compelling program descriptions, visuals, and outreach for digital and social media platforms
• Serve as the public face of Summer at Hockaday, maintaining strong relationships with families and the community
• Support other auxiliary initiatives as needed to enhance overall program quality and impact

As a math teacher, s/he will welcome productive struggle as an essential part of learning and engage in rich tasks that push students beyond answer-getting and into true reasoning. This classroom will feel like a workshop of ideas: collaborative, vibrant, and full of purposeful noise as students test their ideas, sketch models, debate strategies, and celebrate each other’s “aha!” moments. • Teach math to two sections of Fourth Grade
• Develop and implement programming that supports the leadership development of Fourth Grade students in their final year of Lower School
• Partner closely with colleagues to align curriculum, share insights, and design engaging lessons through team meetings, division meetings, and department meetings
• Effectively use technology and assessments to support student growth and learning
• Engage families with warmth, clarity, and a shared excitement for student growth
• Contribute to the life of the Lower School including participating in all assigned duties and engaging in professional development

As a homeroom teacher, s/he will lead morning meetings, perform assigned duties including recess, lunch, and carpool duties, and lead parent teacher conferences. Summer at Hockaday Camp Counselors play a key role in creating a safe, engaging, and joyful camp experience for children ages 4 through middle school. Counselors serve as positive role models, supervise campers throughout the day, assist with activities, and help foster a welcoming and inclusive camp community. Camps run weekly throughout the summer, and a typical workday is approximately 8:00am to 4:00pm. Opportunities may be available for before-care and after-care shifts. Counselors are encouraged to work multiple weeks to create continuity for all participants.

The Hockaday School seeks an Early Childhood Teaching Assistant to join the Hockaday Early Childhood team in Lower School.

The Early Childhood division of Lower School comprises prekindergarten, kindergarten, and primer. At the pre-kindergarten level, students are organized into three homeroom sections of 12 children each.  At the kindergarten/primer level, students are organized into three homeroom sections of 16 children each. Every Early Childhood homeroom is staffed by a teacher and a full-time teaching assistant. Homeroom teachers, with the support of assistants, share responsibility for weekly work in math, language arts, social studies, and cooking. Specialists deliver instruction in science, world languages, physical education, art, and music.
