Summer at Hockaday Camp Counselor

Position Description (What you will do): 

Summer at Hockaday Camp Counselors play a key role in creating a safe, engaging, and joyful camp experience for children ages 4 through middle school. Counselors serve as positive role models, supervise campers throughout the day, assist with activities, and help foster a welcoming and inclusive camp community. Camps run weekly throughout the summer, and a typical workday is approximately 8:00am to 4:00pm. Opportunities may be available for before-care and after-care shifts. Counselors are encouraged to work multiple weeks to create continuity for all participants.

  • Supervise campers throughout the day, including activities, outdoor play, carpools, and transitions
  • Actively engage with campers during games, projects, and group activities
  • Support lead instructors and camp directors in implementing daily schedules and lesson plans
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all campers
  • Model positive behavior, teamwork, and leadership
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with fellow counselors and camp leadership
  • Follow all Summer at Hockaday policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Assist with setup, cleanup, and organization of camp spaces and materials
  • Respond appropriately to camper needs, conflicts, and minor behavioral challenges
  • Be part of a collaborative and supportive camp team
  • Gain meaningful experience working with children in a school/camp setting
  • Develop leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Make a positive impact while creating unforgettable summer memories
  • Other duties as assigned


We’re excited about you because you have... 

  • Must be entering at least the Junior Year in high school
  • Previous camp counseling experience preferred
  • Experience working with children (camp, school, coaching, babysitting, tutoring, etc.) preferred

  • Ability to remain positive, patient, and energetic in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to follow directions and take initiative when needed
  • Must have the ability to work in a school environment through satisfactory completion of all legally required and School-required background and screening checks and verifications, including criminal and sex offender background checks.

In this role, you will....

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: 

  • Ability to actively participate in camp activities indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, and engage with campers for extended periods
  • Regularly use close and distance vision, including working at a computer screen for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds (supplies, equipment, etc.)
  • Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with students, fellow staff and community members
