Position Description:

This position consists of teaching Sixth and Seventh Grade Spanish courses to students in the Middle School. Hockaday is on a 6-day rotating block schedule, with 80-minute classes meeting three times in each rotation. This position also serves as an advisor to a group of Middle School students who meet daily.  

The World Language Department at The Hockaday School aims to equip students with skills that enable them to communicate effectively, both linguistically and culturally, in more than one language. Hockaday language teachers encourage students to become lifelong learners of the languages they study. By emphasizing study of culture at all levels and employing a variety of materials and strategies, we aim to bring language learners to increasingly greater levels of proficiency in written and spoken language. An interactive program of instruction taught in the target language, at all levels, meets the varied learning styles of the students and prepares them for further language acquisition in college or in real-world situations.

Dates: December 15, 2025 – March 13, 2026

Essential Functions:

• Teach two sections of Sixth Grade Spanish and three sections of Seventh Grade Spanish to Middle School students
• Serve as a Sixth Grade advisor to a group of Middle School Students
• Assess understanding using a variety of formative and summative assessments
• Communicate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents
• Attend Sixth and Seventh Grade level meetings and faculty meetings
• Attend World Language Department Meetings
• Monitoring and supporting students during Study Hall, Advisory Flex, and Cornerstones.
• Serve as a sponsor of a Middle School Club
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Experience:

• Advanced degree in Spanish or related field is preferred
• Teaching experience in Spanish is preferred, ideally in an independent school setting
• Possess oral and written fluency in both English and Spanish
• Commitment to being a supportive, respectful, and energetic colleague
• Must have the ability to work in a school environment through satisfactory completion of all legally required and School-required background and screening checks and verifications, including criminal and sex offender background checks.

Training:

• Participate in all requisite School trainings
• Attend required staff development and training sessions throughout the year
• Attend periodic in-service meetings
• Acknowledge receipt of the current Employee Handbook and are responsible for reviewing the contents and abiding by rules, policies and procedures stated in the Handbook or otherwise by the School
• Abide by Hockaday’s Code of Ethics and Conduct
• Commit to the ideals expressed in Hockaday’s Tenets of Faculty Excellence

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

• Regularly works in standard office or classroom conditions and climate
• Regularly uses close and distance vision, including working at a computer screen for extended periods of time; ability to observe students from various distances
• Frequently required to move around the office/classroom; works at a desk for extended periods of time
• Ability to occasionally move items weighing up to 30lbs. across the campus/classroom/office
• Ability to periodically support before and after-school or weekend events
• Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with students, fellow staff and community members
