Position Description: |
The Hockaday School is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse. This position, which reports to the Director of Health Services, runs through the school year. Vacations are concurrent with school holidays. |

Essential Functions: |
- With other school healthcare providers, annually assess, modify, and implement school health management protocols.
- Assess health status of the students who present in the Health Center for symptoms of illness, assess and determine plan and interventions.
- Distribute medications and therapies as required.
- Record, organize and maintain accurate health records.
- Assess students with injuries and respond with appropriate intervention methods.
- Administer medication if needed, and when authorized by parents.
- Conduct vision and hearing screenings as well as other routine health checks.
- Work with students and families in managing chronic diseases.
- When on duty, act as the point of contact for parents and the community for health-related concerns.
- Work with other student support team professionals to support and manage students with mental health issues, behavioral problems, chronic illness, learning differences, and other common conditions.
- Work closely with the Director of Health Services, teachers, administrators, and parents to accommodate the physical health needs of the student and school employee population.
- Communicate with parents regarding health-related issues.
- Follow Health Center guidelines and work closely with the other nurses.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Experience: |
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas.
- CPR certified
- Participate in continuing education activities relevant to school nursing and pediatrics to maintain licensure.
- Prior nursing experience in pediatrics.
- Good communication skills with students, teachers and parents.
- Independent assessment and clinical judgment skills.
- Ability to deal with multi-disciplinary issues.
- An understanding of, and empathy for diversity and pluralism.
- A desire to work in and become a member of a multicultural community.
- Technical competency – Basic understanding and ability to use computers and technology including Microsoft Windows and Office products.
- Well-developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with all constituents in a school environment, including students, co-workers, parents, alumnae, volunteers, trustees, and the public.
- Adaptability, honesty, self-reliance, teamwork, dependability, flexibility, willingness to listen and learn, work ethic, determination, persistence, problem-solving skills, loyalty, and congeniality are essential
- Must have the ability to work in a school environment through satisfactory completion of all legally required and School-required background and screening checks and verifications, including criminal and sex offender background checks.

Training: |
- Participate in all requisite School trainings prior to the start of the school, and throughout the School year.
- Attend required staff development and training sessions throughout the year
- Attend periodic in-service meetings
- Acknowledge receipt of the current Employee Handbook and are responsible for reviewing the contents and abiding by rules, policies and procedures stated in the Handbook or otherwise by the School
- Abide by Hockaday’s Code of Ethics and Conduct
- Commit to the ideals expressed in Hockaday’s Tenets of Staff Excellence

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: |
- Regularly works in standard office conditions and climate.
- Regularly uses close and distance vision, including working at a computer screen for extended periods of time; Ability to observe students from various distances.
- Frequently required to move around the office; stands and works at a desk for extended periods of time;; occasionally moves around campus.
- Ability to occasionally move objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
- Sometimes works in an occasionally stressful environment, effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts with stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions.
- Ability to periodically work flexible hours to support before and after-school or weekend events.
