Position Description:
Hockaday is seeking a part-time staff member for its Lower School Afterschool Program, Happy Happenings. About 65 lower
school students, ranging from Pre-Kindergarten to 4th grade, attend this afternoon program daily. Happy Happenings is held
on campus and is open from 2:45 until 6pm on weekdays, when Lower School is in session. Typically, there will be three to
five working team members each day at Happy Happenings. Schedule may be flexible depending upon the needs of the
school and the successful candidate.
Essential Functions:
• Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of each student enrolled in the program
• Support children’s emotional and social development by encouraging understanding of others and positive selfconcepts
• Provide a positive, fun, and enjoyable after-school environment in which the students can relax and enjoy their time in
the program
• Perform daily tasks, such as serving snacks, organizing materials, organizing inside and outdoor activities, providing
active supervision with the children in attendance
• Recognize and react calmly and effectively in hazardous or dangerous situations
• Handle discipline promptly and in accordance with Hockaday’s stated policies
• Ability to work flexible hours
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Experience:
• Associate’s degree or higher preferred
• Obtain and maintain current first aid and CPR certification
• Experience with child development and/or management of children a plus
• Basic understanding and ability to use i-Pads
• Well-developed interpersonal and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with
young children, co-workers, and parents
• Personal characteristics include: Adaptability, honesty, self-reliance, teamwork, dependability, flexibility, creativity,
energetic, willingness to listen and learn, work ethic, persistence, problem-solving skills, loyalty, and congeniality are essential
• Ability to follow instructions, procedures and work independently
• Must be able to relate to children and respect each child as an individual
• Must have the ability to work in a school environment through satisfactory completion of all legally required and School-required background and screening checks and verifications, including criminal and sex offender background checks.
Training:
• Participate in all requisite School trainings before starting employment and throughout the school year.
• Attend required staff development and training sessions throughout the year
• Acknowledge receipt of the current Employee Handbook and are responsible for reviewing the contents and abiding by rules, policies and procedures stated in the Handbook or otherwise by the School
• Abide by Hockaday’s Code of Ethics and Conduct
• Commit to the ideals expressed in Hockaday’s Tenets of Staff Excellence
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
• Continually works in standard classroom conditions and climate, frequently works outdoors in varying weather conditions and climate
• Uses close and distance vision, ability to observe students from various distances
• Frequently required to move around the classroom and position oneself to supervise children
• Works in an occasionally stressful environment, effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges and a varied and diverse array of contacts
• Stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
• Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with students, fellow staff and community members
